Is the guideline on the wiki for maps to have black in them or nothing in the file?

There's no official guideline for that. I have a tendency to have a black background, but it might be more useful to have it transparent.

Again, keep in mind the rule for Wiki editing is "when in doubt, make the edit" because it can usually be undone later
