The concept of an IRL room escape is now being made into a movie:
"Escape Room" (2019)

Have watched Christopher Robin recently.
Need to watch more new movies, I think.
Edit:
I watched it - and I WANT TO BE THERE, IN THIS ROOM!!!!!!
also, it reminded me about Hollow series I have seen not so long time ago.

was about to post it but you beat me to it
it seems there's also another movie from 2017 with the same title, though not very good.

Watched Escape Room. It's absolute garbage, like I thought it would be from the trailer. I'm not even mad, except it disgraces the whole concept. 1/10 lolol
YMS did a great review of it here, and I suggest you all watch it instead of the actual movie. Unless it comes out on Netflix or something and you have nothing better to do:

found your comment! I saw the word Submachine and I knew it had to be you
if you've not yet tried an IRL escape room yet, i feel like i should warn you that they're mostly based not in surreal atmospheric games like Submachine/Rusty Lake/Deep Sleep but in the classic Japanese escape games, perhaps with a theme stuck on top of it like prisons, submarines, the jungle, a popular TV series, Harry Potter, whatever (this is at least where I live).
that said, I completely agree with you that the escape genre would benefit much more from a movie like Annihilation or Cube (or even the Rusty Lake movie if it was longer) than this cheap horror stuff we've seen a thousand times. the concept is perhaps not for 'mainstream' audiences or an easy cash-grab, but if done well they at least have the potential of attracting a cult audience, and maybe inspire some good surreal IRL escapes.
