The Submachine Timeline
Theory history: Submitted 2018-06-16
ChryoyoYT wrote: This is a timeline of all the major events that have happened in the world of submachine. From architecture, the player's story, Murtaugh's story, the dates of notes, items, and layers. All of which overlap each other. We had to use Occam's razor many times over and over.
It took a year of slow progress. What started as just some fun little project, grew into a big deal. Now, here it is. To see the evidence and how we came to these conclusions, visit the link listed below. They go into details about how we know all this, and talk about how old certain items, rooms, and events, found in the subnet are. Please leave comments if you spot an error or see room for improvement of some sort.

Most of what you see here is based around what we already know. This is simply meant to bring all the pieces together to make a clearer image of what's going on in the subnet. Of course, that doesn’t mean everything you see here is true. There might have been a few mistakes here and there, and we don’t know enough to give precise times of everything. We also had to provide a lot of evidence for our reasoning. Regardless, I believe this deserves a spot somewhere on the wiki. I’ve done my best, this wasn’t just me though. It involved the entire communities help. (Huge shout out to Sundex he really carried the team.) Even though this is labeled as my theory, it is OUR theory. I’m proud of what we’ve created. So I hope you all enjoy. Without further ado, I give you the story of submachine.

Around 39000 B.C.E: The goddess of Layer 7.
Liz activates the beamer in layer 7, causing the people there to worship her. She was doing this so she could get to the knot through the 5th layer.
Around 38000 B.C.E: Player Plot (Sub 8, Layer 7)
The player traverses a sublayer of layer 7 in sector 9, where no one can be seen. They activate the beamer as well. This opens up the pathway in the 5th layer that leads the player into Submachine 9.
Early 1800s: The birth of O’Toole
Henry o’Toole is born.
1832: The Winter Palace
Henry o’Toole builds the Winter Palace.
1857: The Lighthouse is Built
Henry o’Toole Built a lighthouse. The lower portion is the dungeon he built it on.
Late 19th Century: The Edge
The Edge is built to preserve what the Core has came to be at that time.
1900: The Root
The Root is created by the 4th Dynasty. This is considered the birth of the Outer Rim,
SUMMER OF ???? Between 1857 and 1905: The Accident & beginning
Murtaugh gets into an accident while camping under the waterfall of Kent. He is given his powers through Shiva. Murtaugh also draws his first karma portal.
1904: Covert Front Companion Loss
Karl Von Toten and Kara enter the loop. Kara's urge to explore gets the better of her, as Karl never sees her again.
1905-1906: The Lighthouse/Outer Rim Collapse
Then Murtaugh lives in the kent lighthouse which WAS a tourist attraction. Murtaugh meets Einstein the cat, who came from the 1st layer. We can assume Elizabeth lived with him. Just on a different layer. Murtaugh tests his powers in the lighthouse. These tests caused many people to die from an event known as the collapse of the Outer Rim.
1906-1938: The Lab Experiments/ Singularity/Recruitment
Because of these deaths, people bury Murtaugh alive within the lighthouse, so he creates a portal, the portal is unstable and it ends up taking him through the loop to the lab where he conducted experiments; met the lab scientists, who reverse engineered the edge portals to create the lab portal; and formed 4 exploration teams that were sent out to explore or do something in different parts of the Subnet. Murtaugh uses his newfound power to go around the subnet for the next 32 years. During this process, The Singularity happened. This was when the Scientists found the philosophical device known as S.H.I.V.A and passed their purpose to it: “Why are we?”. S.H.I.V.A knew this answer for a split second, and caused the Subnet to gain sentience. This, in turn, caused the expansion of the Outer Rim. Even with that spontaneous expansion, he explored a third of the subnet, including 291, whose surroundings were the weakest entry point to the core.
1938: Abandonment
Murtaugh abandoned them all to tend to the structure of the plan, thus losing his focus. Each one failed at the mission they were assigned, due to the insanity that came about after the first enlightenment, and were deemed dead or likely dead.
Somewhere between 1941 and 1945 (L2, L4, L6): WWII
In the 6th Layer, World War 2 is currently underway. We are also exploring the 2nd layer during this time. The 4th layer is just chilling.
1970s: Failure
Some people outside of the exploration teams succeeded, and they were escorted to the defense systems to attempt to shut them down. Their attempts ended in failure and death. The player’s most recent predecessor was one of these people as well, but his death was from jumping into the void.
Sometime between 1978 and 1990: The Player Plot (Sub 1-7)
The Player enters the Subnet through a karma portal, and goes through the Submachines. They reuse the lighthouse portal causing some damage to the core and space around it. It also causes a cave in at the dungeon below the lighthouse. When they make it to the loop, they follow Murtaugh’s advice and exit the loop. When they make it to the lab, they complete Murtaugh’s test that the exploration teams couldn’t. When they make it to the Root, they find the three wisdom gems from before and power up the mover that takes them to the Edge. When they make it, they shut off the defense systems, initiating the invasion.
The End
Why did this project die? Oh, did I break your immersion… This is the end. This is all we could do. Submachine 8 is where everything broke. We had to dance around it for bits of information that you read above. The reason for this simply being we haven’t really confirmed what the layers are. If we are going to continue this, we have to ensure the layers don’t change what timeline the plays is in. We could ignore the fact that the player is jumping between timelines and simply say, “Well technically they didn’t go there at that time,” but that wouldn’t be completely true. The goal in making this was to string many dates together in order and give mostly facts with a few fun facts and dating some things. We don’t want to continue until we have more answers. Because that’s what this is. A string of what we’ve discovered. You, and us.
If we were to revive it we MUST answer what the layers are. Thus why I now have an obsession with them. We would then ram into the knot and I’m certain we’d have problems in Submachine 10. Even though we don’t think we will. Submachine10 seems fairly clear and doesn’t give us questions based around time. Either way, we are willing to let others revive it if they so desire.
2018-2019
My team and I have been creating a list of the most important events in the subnet. I wish I could control time. So I could see what’s really going on out there. Apparently there are those who escaped and came back several times over… We have documents on them and how quickly they got out. Some at speeds you couldn’t even believe. Almost as if they used a portal to get right to the end! If there even is an end. Are we too stupid to escape? Will I forever be here in this location? Documenting information. Will I ever solve what’s out there. Are there any answers to my questions? I don’t know, but a new location is being created as we speak. All we can do is wait to observe it.
